Daylilies and Deer

Sometimes I have to wonder what deer ate before people began gardening. Gardening with all sorts of exotic ornamental plants imported from abroad. Many of those happen to have originated from Asia, especially Japan. Just think of azaleas, hostas and daylilies.
Yes, daylilies. In general, the deer seem to prefer to dine on the fancier garden cultivars, those we keep fertilized and well watered in dry spells. They seem to mostly ignore any of plain orange outhouse or ditch lilies, Hemerocallis fulva, growing wild by the roadside. This year they decided to sample the ones at the bottom of my driveway down by the mailbox.
There is a good stand of daylilies on Hog Hollow Road. In fact, now that I think about it, this is where I got my starter plants. Interesting in that of course I had to dig them. H. fulva is sterile. It sets no seed but multiplies asexually by root offsets.
Doubt it was surveying the salad bar but an interesting juxtaposition,
the daylilies and this long dead deer.
